Why “Calm Down” Doesn’t Work for Anxiety—And What to Do Instead

Writer: Torre BoydTorre Boyd

If you have anxiety, you’ve probably been told to just calm down at some point. And let’s be real—that advice is about as helpful as telling a thunderstorm to stop raining.

The problem isn’t that you don’t want to calm down. The problem is that anxiety makes your brain race at 1,000 miles a minute, making slowing down feel nearly impossible. When your mind is in overdrive, trying to force yourself into stillness can feel frustrating, overwhelming, or even make your anxiety worse.

So instead of fighting against your brain’s natural response, try meeting it where it is—with movement.

Shake It Off: The Power of a Silly Dance Party

When anxiety kicks in, your body is filled with excess energy. Instead of trying to suppress it, channel it into something fun and lighthearted—like a silly dance party for one.

Yep, you read that right. Put on your favorite song, crank up the volume, and move however feels good. Flail your arms, jump around, spin in circles—whatever gets you out of your head and into your body.

Here’s why this works:

🎵 Movement helps release built-up tension – Anxiety often feels like trapped energy in your body. Dancing helps shake it out.

🎵 It interrupts anxious thought loops – When you're focusing on moving, it’s harder for your mind to spiral.

🎵 Joy is the antidote to stress – Dancing is fun. It reminds you that even in moments of anxiety, you can still create joy.

🎵 It engages your senses – Music, movement, and rhythm pull you back into the present moment, grounding you in something tangible.

Anxiety Needs an Outlet—Give It One

If sitting still and trying to “calm down” isn’t working for you, don’t force it. Anxiety thrives on resistance, so instead of fighting it, redirect it. Move. Laugh. Dance it out.

Your brain might be moving at lightning speed, but that doesn’t mean you have to stay stuck in anxiety’s grip. So the next time you feel overwhelmed, press play on your favorite song and let your body lead the way.
